Student Feedback Forum 2005

RESPONSES TO STUDENT FEEDBACK

The Media department is responsive to student feedback.  Here are responses to questions raised by students at the Media Students’ Forum held in 2005.

General comments from students:
Students commented that staff and students in all Media units were very helpful, always approachable and supportive displaying a high level of professionalism and care towards students in their classes. There was also agreement in the forum that students thought highly of the program of study they were undertaking in Media.

Why are most 200 and 300 level MAS units worth 3 credit points instead of 4?
The Department has pursued this matter as part of a greater review of the BMedia program. It is expected that Media  200 and 300 level units will become 4 cps offerings as soon as practicable.

Can tutors be more widely available?
The Department revised its tutor availability policy to ensure that tutors are accessible for students outside of tutorials.

Can lecturers and tutors respond to student email more quickly?
The Department has instituted an official email policy which is reproduced in all study guides.

Can Writing tutorials be 2 hours rather than 1 hour?
This change is not currently viable due to the large numbers in Media writing units, especially at 200 level. However, further Department discussions in 2006 pursued this possibility and the department is currently reviewing the situation.

Can the teaching skills of tutors conform to a standard?
The Department has made strenuous efforts to achieve consistently high standards of  tutors. Convenors regularly monitor tutor performance in all units.  In those units with large enrolments – MAS 104, MAS 105, MAS 203 – additional staff were appointed in 2006 to administer tutors on behalf of the convenors of these units.
