BACKGROUND
Maree is a screen writer/director. She has a BA Comm (UTS) and PhD (Macquarie University). Prior to her appointment at Macquarie University, Maree taught at the Australian Film Television and Radio School where she was Lecturer in Screen Studies and Head of Documentary.
Maree's most recent screen production is the documentary The Trouble with Merle which she researched, wrote and directed. The film has screened on television and at festivals nationally and internationally and has won several awards including the NSW Premier's History Award. The script for The Trouble with Merle was shortlisted for the NSW Premier's Literary Award (Screenwriting).
Other projects include the award winning AFI nominated documentary, A Calcutta Christmas; the short comedy/drama Every Little Breeze and the AFI nominated feature length documentary Philippines My Philippines.
Maree has a particular interest in documentary screen culture and production. She has been invited to speak at and facilitate numerous screen industry conferences and workshops. She has been Programme Director for the International Australian Documentary Conference and Senior Project Officer for the Australian Film Commission.
Her current documentary research project focuses on ideas of conformity and nonconformity in Japan and the impact of High Definition recording technology on the director/subject relationship.
