Department of Media Funding Guidelines
The research of higher degree candidates is supported by a specific Research Fund.
You are entitled to $2500 per year of full-time candidature or $1250 per year of part-time candidature from the Departmental Postgraduate Research Fund.
Criteria
- All students enrolled in postgraduate research degrees in the Department of Media may apply for research funds.
- Proposals must be relevant to the candidate’s research program, and will be evaluated by the Media Department Research Committee.
Proposals are invited for research-related activities such as attendance at conferences/workshops/seminars; visits to archives, specialist libraries, relevant institutions; formal meetings with relevant academics or media industry personnel; attendance at festivals and symposia. Other expenses will also be considered, such as for hardware or software related to research; library expenses; funds for research-related activities, eg. relevant training courses or workshops, transcribing of interviews or editing of written work.
Application Procedures
- Candidates must first discuss the proposed expenditure with their Supervisor to determine whether or not it is appropriate.
- Applications should be on the requisite form and handed to the Media Department Administrator, Justine Martin (W6A 806) or emailed to justine.martin@scmp.mq.edu.au.
- Candidates should submit brief proposals (max. 2 pages) to accompany the form.
- These must include as much detail as possible relating to your research costs.
- If you are attending a conference you must submit some detail on the conference programme and indicate how it connects with your thesis topic.
- For airfares you must submit a quotation from STA (Macquarie University). Please note that the university will not refund payments made by you through another travel agent.
- You must give accurate detail on the costs of registration and accommodation.
- These costs of airfare and conference registration will be paid in advance with sufficient notice.
- Accommodation and local travel costs (buses, trams, taxis) are not paid in advance.
- These costs will be paid on your return from the event, upon production of appropriate receipts.
- In the case of research-related travel, please ensure that University travel guidelines are followed (these are available from Frank Rea, SCMP.)
- Students may also apply for funding to attend international conferences from the University Postgraduate Research Fund and the Traveling Scholarship Fund available from Macquarie University Office.
