How to Apply for Admission
Step One
Make an appointment to discuss your proposed study program with the Media Department’s Post-Graduate Coordinator, currently Dr Maree Delofski, on (02) 9850 8761, or by email at: mdelofsk@scmp.mq.edu.au
Dr Delofski will advise you on how to proceed to the next step of your application, and will also make suggestions as to which member of full-time staff might be an appropriate supervisor for your proposed topic.
Step Two
Prepare a 2-page proposal in which you state clearly the following:
- A short description of your proposed thesis/project in which you say why you want to undertake this topic, indicating your overall objective; what specific activities of reading, research, and (where appropriate) production will help you achieve your overall objective, and also indicating how your proposed project connects with other work in its field;
- Include a bibliography of the books and articles that seem to you appropriate to the postgraduate work you are planning to undertake, and/or a list of films, audio-sonic works, or whatever textual material you deem appropriate to your proposed postgraduate project.
Step Three
Obtain application forms from the Macquarie University Higher Degree Research Unit. The HDRU will tell you if you are eligible to apply for your particular research degree and whether you are eligible to apply for a scholarship, as either a local or an international student.
On your application please clearly state that you are applying for a research degree with the Department of Media.
Step Four
Submit to the Department of Media an application no longer than four pages (which includes the material you gave, gathered for Step Two, 1 and 2). A sub-committee of the Media Department will evaluate your application. The Department will also determine which supervisors (Principal and Associate) are most appropriate for your topic. Ultimately, offers of admission are decided by the Divisional Postgraduate Studies Committee, which takes into account the Department’s recommendation. After admission you may set up a meeting with your Principal Supervisor to discuss your proposed thesis further and make arrangements for your ongoing supervision.
